The Bucks County Intermediate Unit is the Successful Grantee for Head Start initiatives in the Bucks County

This week, officials from the Office of Head Start provided the Bucks County Intermediate Unit with official Notice of Award for an annual amount of $4,333,541, making the agency responsible for continuing and improving Bucks County’s Head Start efforts for a grant period of five years.

The BCIU Head Start Initiative will serve 509 students in Head Start classrooms across Bucks County. The program will also introduce Early Head Start supports to Bucks County, serving 32 pregnant mothers, infants, and toddlers. The BCIU has a rich history of serving preschool students with special needs. As the county’s Head Start provider, the BCIU will expand their services to ensure that even more students are ready for their transition to Kindergarten.

We are elated that we were chosen as the recipient of this grant to provide support to the mental, social, and emotional development of children from birth to age 5.” said Dr. Barry J. Galasso, the Executive Director of the Bucks County Intermediate Unit. “Children are the heart of the BCIU, our mission is to help them develop to the optimum of their abilities. We believe that “Every Child Deserves a Head Start.”

In addition to preparing children for school, parents and teachers will also benefit from the proceeds of the grant. Comprehensive services provided within the centers include: health, developmental, and behavioral screenings; higher health, safety and nutrition services; increased professional development opportunities for teachers; and increased parent engagement opportunities.

Presently, there are 20 Head Start Classrooms throughout Upper, Central, and Lower Bucks with locations in Bristol, Morrisville, Warminster, Quakertown, Croydon and Levittown.

During the summer, the Head Start program will transition from the current operator to the Intermediate Unit. The BCIU will be fully responsible for Bucks County Head Start in the fall.

The Bucks County Intermediate Unit is one of 29 regional educational agencies established by law in Pennsylvania in 1971. Working between the Pennsylvania State Department of Education and the local school districts, the intermediate unit's mission is to provide services that can be offered most econimcally at the regional level.
